Talent Madhuku | Hit and Run

Hit and Run

Beside the dried blood on the road,

a beautiful wreath of flowers glistens in the sun.

How many times he sat there.

Every time I walked by his house

I got the feeling the old man never left his chair.

It’s such a shame the driver sped away.

They swear those who witnessed it.

A morning light on new leaves.

The old man’s face shined till the end.

A Morning in Town

“Two vasara vabereki!” touts

shout loudly near the bus terminus.

Along the street, a morning wind of emotions blows softly;

There’s a rustle of urgency among the walking crowd.

Vendors dotted on the pavement.

Streams of litter meandering by the roadside.

A council official rushes past a herd of cattle.

“Hokoyo nekanzuru!” a voice echoes across the street.

A sound of hurrying feet.

Engines suddenly roaring to life.

The smell of tires and diesel fills the air.
