Violet Barungi is a playwright, novelist, and short-story writer who has written many literary pieces. She was born in 1943 in Mbarara, Uganda. In 1976, she received her BA in history with honors from the Kampala Makerere University. In 1964 while a student, Violet wrote her first short story, “Kefa Kazana”. In 1967, she got married to B. N. I Barungi, a civil servant. They have 6 children. Her first novel is The Shadow and the Substance (1998). In 1997, she joined Femrite, the only female publishing company in Uganda, as an assistant editor. Her second novel was published by Femrite – Cassandra (1999). She has also published several short stories for children, to mention but a few; “Tit for Tat” (1998), “The Promise” (2002), “Our Cousins from Abroad” (2003), and “The Boy Who Became King” (2004) and Jogo Goes to School (Children Read Everywhere Anthology, 2004).
