Guest Writer at NAI
Information about the scholarship
The future of the scholarship
The host has been the "Cultural Images in and of Africa" programme, with Mai Palmberg as coordinator. When she retires in January 2010 the programme ends in its present form. No new guest writers' scholarship has been announced. If and when a new African writers' scholarship announcement is made, information will be available on this website. No applications submitted now can be considered.
Purposes
The raison d'ętre behind the guest writer grant is the conviction that knowledge of Africa is not gained only from social science analysis and facts, and that literature can significantly add another language and meaning, and illustrate the diversity. The purpose of the grant is three-fold:
Firstly, to provide an opportunity to sit and write, away from daily chores, teaching or other (the Nordic Africa Institute is also not a teaching institution);
Secondly, to make possible readings to audiences in Sweden, and one or two other Nordic countries by visits to those countries (the time and spacing of these visits will be negotiated, but should include at least one other Nordic country – Norway, Denmark or Finland;
Thirdly, to add by their presence to the intellectual and cultural atmosphere of the Nordic Africa Institute with its researchers and other staff, guests, guest researchers and scholarship students.
Conditions
The Guest Writer’s scholarship includes a return air-fare (Economy Class), accommodation, a subsistence allowance of SEK (Swedish kronor) 250 (approx. USD 30) a day (maximum SEK 25,000 for 90 days) plus an installation grant of SEK 2,500 (approx. USD 300), a shared office and free photocopying facilities up to a maximum of 1,000 copies. Guest Writers have access to a computer/MS Word at the office and have to do their own typing.
The maximum duration of the stay is 90 days. If the Guest Writer spends less than 90 days at the Institute, the scholarship of SEK 25,000 is reduced proportionally. To be entitled to the travel costs, the Guest Writer has to stay for at least two months.
Qualifications
Applicants must have some documented record of writing, with at least some publishing. The applicant must be able to express herself/himself in English, although this does not have to be the language she/he writes in. We encourage young writers to apply.
Previous guest writers
The programme has previously hosted two guest writers, Ama Ata Aidoo from Ghana, and Gabeba Baderoon from South Africa. Both guest writers added in a very positive way both to the dialogue and interchange at the institute itself, and gave a new dimension to the interface with various groups and audiences in the Nordic countries. We hope and believe that their stay also benefited the guest writers.
