What would happen if, by some miracle of consensus, or by universal decree, all writing and the making of all literature were to cease? Is there any reason why the existing surfeit for books and paperware should not suffice for an eternity of readers?
Must we persist in enlarging the republic of letters by reducing a continent of trees? Man has always found ways to consecrate banal habits, but what is a writer for?
